I called in at the National Maritime Museum this afternoon, mainly for final checks before next week's Computational Modelling '19 and Physical Separation '19 conferences, but also to look in on a half day conference on Mine Wastes in a Circular Economy, organised by Tevi (Cornish for ‘grow’), a new, unique and exciting EU-funded venture which aims to create economic and environmental growth in Cornwall.
One of Tevi's main partners is the University of Exeter's Camborne School of Mines, and I was impressed by the presentations that researchers from CSM made, on mine waste innovation, bioprocessing and bioremediation. They were introduced by Dr Edvard Glücksman, of the University of Exeter and the Impact Partnership Development Manager with Tevi, and CSM's Professor in Sustainable Mining Karen Hudson-Edwards. Karen is the European Association of Geochemistry's Distinguished Lecturer for 2019 (MEI Online). She joined the University's Environment & Sustainabilty Institute and CSM in October 2017 and I am sure that we will be hearing a lot more about the work of this group, hopefully at next year's Sustainable Minerals '20 and Biomining '20, which will also be held at the Maritime Museum.
Also great to catch up with Frances Wall, Professor of Applied Geology at CSM, and to congratulate her on receiving the Geological Society's prestigious William Smith Award yesterday at a special ceremony to mark the Society’s President’s Day. Frances is the first ever female recipient, and the award recognises her distinguished achievement in the field of applied geology (see also posting of 8th March).
I was also pleased to see that Tevi had invited geology students from Truro School to the meeting and they are with Frances, Edvard and Karen in the photo below.

Being basically a geologist myself, I am happy to read "geology students" appearing in our Blog.
ReplyDeleteMore happy that "Researchers" got a platform
Integration from exploration to end product, more presentations on related areas, that too by Research scholars augurs well for mineral industry.
