On the mortality of authors.....

One of the first text-books that I bought when I arrived at Leeds University in 1963 was Theoretical Structural Metallurgy by A.H. Cottrell. It still sits on my bookshelves along with Dislocations and Plastic Flow in Crystals, by the same author, both untouched since my University days, after which I chose extractive over physical metallurgy.

Both books, however, played a large part in my undergraduate life. Theoretical Structural Metallurgy was published in 1948, when I was 3 years old, so I assumed that the author had passed on many years ago. Not so- in the April 2012 issue of Materials World (pps. 54-55), there is a full obituary to Sir Alan Cottrell, who died in February at the age of 92.

Thirty years after the publication of TSM, the first edition of my book, Mineral Processing Technology appeared, and it is always nice to meet mineral processors who have used one of the editions during their careers.
News of Alan Cottrell’s death reminded me of a memorable evening last year in Kruger National Park, the setting for the Base Metals ’11 bush-braai. Barbara and I shared a table with three lovely ladies, metallurgists from South Africa and Zimbabwe. When we had introduced ourselves, one of them asked if I was B.A. Wills, who wrote “the book”. When I replied that I was, she cried “Oh my God, we must have a photo- my friends back home think you are dead!”

As the American author Mark Twain might have replied “the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”.

Elsevier’s Peer Review Challenge

On March 28th Elsevier launched the "How do you see the future of peer review?" challenge (see also Peer review- is it outdated?)

The aim of the challenge is to invite the reviewing community to submit ideas on any of the following 3 aspects of the journal peer review system:

1) The peer review process itself - new approaches or enhancements of current approaches
2) Approaches to help early career researchers to become reviewers
3) Improving the recognition and rewarding of reviewers by their institutions and/or journal publishers

The challenge website will remain open to entries until midnight May 7th 2012 (CET).

Elsevier will work with the overall winners of the challenge to determine if their idea could be piloted with a suitable Elsevier journal, and in cooperation with the editors of that pilot journal. The winning ideas will be announced around August 15th through the challenge website.

Elsevier hope that this challenge will help inform the ongoing discussions on peer review and help them to work more closely with the reviewing community.

Book Review- Water in Mineral Processing

The following review has been submitted to MEI by Prof. Fathi Habashi:

Water in Mineral Processing, Edited by Jaroslaw Drelich, 416 pages, 18 x 26 cm, hardbound, ISBN 978-0-87335-349-6, published by Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Englewood, Colorado, USA 2012, US $ 109 [discount for members and students].

The book is a compilation of papers presented at the First International Symposium on Water in Mineral Processing held in Seattle, Washington, at the SME Meeting in February 2012. It introduces one of the challenges confronting the mining and minerals processing industry in the 21st century. Because most mineral processing requires high water use, there will be even more urgency to develop and employ technologies that will reduce consumption and the discharge of process-affected water.

A significant portion of the content is devoted to saline solutions and processing with sea water. Other chapters explore the latest in water treatment and biological methods, the effect of water quality on minerals processing, and water and tailings management. The book is composed of the following parts:

[2] Processing with sea water and saline solution (7 papers)
[3] Water treatment and biological methods (8 papers)
[4] Effect of water quality on minerals processing (8 papers)
[5] Water and tailings management (8 papers)

The editor is with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The book is well produced and contains a subject index.

March was a record month for the MEI blog

It’s hard to believe that I have been blogging away now for over 3 years. I have greatly enjoyed writing the blog posts, and it is much more pleasurable knowing that people are actually reading them. Last month was a record in terms of visits (3164) and page views (5776), and daily views so far this month are at all-time highs, mainly due to my posting on the collectorless flotation breakthrough!

I have tried to make the blog fairly eclectic. News of mineral processing and its people predominates, but occasionally I indulge my passions for travel, outdoor activities, geology and history.

What I would like to see, however, is more interaction between me and you as readers. Let’s make this a real forum for the exchange of information and views, to complement the Minerals Engineers group on LinkedIn which is also growing in popularity. It is easy to post comments on the blog and I would really appreciate these, even if you strongly disagree with something that I have said.

Tudor history on the Fal estuary

Biohydromet ’12 is only two months away, and is already attracting a large international audience to Falmouth.

I open every MEI Conference in Falmouth with a brief background to the unique history of Cornwall and how it has, over the centuries, retained its original Celtic roots.

English history is colourful and bloody, and none more so than in the Tudor era. Falmouth lies on the estuary of the beautiful River Fal and perched on the headland only 15 minutes walk from the conference venue is the Tudor fort Pendennis castle, built around 1540 as one of a series of castles running along the south west coast of England on the orders of England’s most famous and grotesque kings, Henry VIII, who most people know had 6 wives, two of whom were executed, including Anne Boleyn, the mother of another famous monarch Elizabeth I.

In order to marry Anne Boleyn, Henry had to renounce Catholicism in order to divorce his Spanish queen Catherine of Aragon, so the threat of invasion from catholic France and Spain was imminent. The invasion did eventually take place during the reign of Elizabeth, but Pendennis Castle saw no action during the Tudor dynasty.

On the first evening of every conference in Falmouth, I take delegates on a guided coastal path walk, which takes in part of the castle on the Fal Estuary and then we skirt the outer moat en route to a welcome beer in old Falmouth.

The main castle is well worth a visit if you have an hour or so to spare during the conference period. Set high on the headland it offers panoramic views of Falmouth Bay, and looks across to its sister castle across the river at St. Mawes.

The castle has a Discovery Centre, which allows visitors to explore the fascinating history of the castle, complete with interactive displays and activities, including an exhibit on Tudor battles.
