Memories of Prof. Heinrich Schubert

There was sad news from Germany last month of the death of one of the 20th century's leading mineral processors, Prof. Heinrich Schubert (full obituary on MEI Online).

I met Prof. Schubert only once, and then only very briefly, when I photographed him being awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2006 IMPC in Istanbul (MEI Online).

One of his young colleagues, Dr. Martin Rudolph, of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology has sent a few more photos, and requests that anyone who would like to share their memories of Prof. Schubert might do so via this posting.

In 2016, Prof. Schubert was honoured by a special issue of International Journal of Mineral Processing, containing some of the latest research results in his areas of interest by invited authors in these fields (posting of 5 December 2016). He is seen below with Guest Editors Prof. Urs Alexander Peuker, of TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Dr. Martin Rudolph, of the Helmhotz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technologies.

  1. On behalf of the International Mineral Processing Council I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the late Professor Heinrich Schubert and also to his many colleagues and friends at Freiberg University. Heinrich made an enormous contribution during his long and illustrious career to the world of mineral processing and was arguably one of the great mineral processors of the past century. As is well known, his achievements were recognized by the Council by his receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Mineral Processing Congress in Istanbul in 2006. The Council will pay due tribute to Professor Schubert at the time of the XXIX IMPC in Moscow in September.

    Kind regards
    Cyril O’Connor
    Chairman: IMPC
