Hopefully in the future something can be done to bring in more operators, I think everyone else at the conference would benefit from their presence as well. The presentations are well arranged and run in a good order with the coarser end of comminution in the early stages and the finer at the end of the conference, along delegates to pick and choose sessions that interest them best. As with most conferences it would be good to see more operators present, but in these hard times that is not surprising. So congratulations again to MEI for another very good conference, with some great content and well and efficiently run. Looking forward to Comminution '18 already.. We met old friends in the field, with whom we discussed about the trend of the mineral processing process. Also it is a great chance to make acquaintance with new professional scholars from research institutes and universities, which allows us big opportunities to catch up with the most updated scientific achievements and share our work made in the superfine grinding sphere. Comminution provides significant help in applying the new technology into practical industrial production. Look forward to seeing you in next Comminution in 2018.
Alex Wang, King's Ceramics & Chemicals Co., Ltd., ChinaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6908362959739425575.post-81512932227564681262016-05-05T03:16:11.343+01:002016-05-05T03:16:11.343+01:00Dear Barry, I have to say that the conference exce...Dear Barry, I have to say that the conference exceeded my expectations (it was my first ME conference), very well organized encompassing top quality work, looking forward to Comminution 18.
Cristián. We have alerted Dave Capstick to your comments on his paper so look out for his response.
Yes, we did make an effort to attract operators by offering them 10 minute presentations, and with no requirement to submit papers, but unfortunately not a single taker! But as many people commented, the conference would have been of great value to operators, so maybe next time, when the economic climate is hopefully better.
Are you still with Glencore?MEIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14834780351452765156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6908362959739425575.post-86580963186336807092016-05-03T02:54:54.082+01:002016-05-03T02:54:54.082+01:00Hello Barry
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make th...Hello Barry
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make the conference this time but I was provided with a number of the papers to read.
Is it worth having a preliminary review of these papers prior to the conference such as AUSIMM or SAG does? The paper you mention in the conference report from Capstick about combining deslime cyclones and fine grinding has some questionable conclusions based on the data presented. It claims an efficiency gain by using the cyclones ahead of the fine grinding mills. However a summary of the data shows that prior to the change the performance was grinding from 26 microns to 16 microns in 19 kWh/t. After the addition of cyclones the entire circuit is making a P80 of 21 microns in 16 kWh/t. The 5 micron coarser product for a relatively small decrease in overall circuit energy could be considered to be less efficient. With a coarser circuit feed than the original case maybe it would be break even, but an improvement in circuit efficiency? Probably not.
The second conclusion in the paper regarding grinding media is also fundamentally flawed in using grams per ton rather than g/kWh for calculating the total media consumption comparison By changing the residence time and specific energy of the actual milled product between the two cases they would have also changed the g/ton of media wear. You can’t use that value from the modified flowsheet to calculate for the original flowsheet which would be a lower g/ton.
Also after Comminution 14 there was some talk of allowing sites to give shorter presentations without submitting a paper. Is this still a possibility for the future?
Thank you
Mike LarsonAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03842814638379239342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6908362959739425575.post-32507989372497983902016-04-30T08:04:41.407+01:002016-04-30T08:04:41.407+01:00Barry - Excellent conference! Good papers, made more powerful by a single stream which meant high attendance at each session, and good long breaks for informal discussions throughout the day, and meals in a spacious vendors area to encourage circulation. A great formula for a conference - quality over quantity, and time for discussion and networking and to keep the energy levels high. I wish all conferences could manage this balance so well.
